Inserm
Founded in 1964, the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm) is a public establishment focusing on science and technology that falls under the dual supervision of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Research.
Inserm is France’s only public research institute fully dedicated to human health. Its researchers study all diseases, from the most common to the extremely rare, through their research work in the fields of biology, medicine and public health..
Inserm’s primary mission involves encouraging communication between:- Fundamental research, which aims to clarify the unknown, without any specific aim;
- Clinical research, which is conducted on patients;
- Therapeutic or diagnostic research, which aims to study diseases;
- Public health research, which strives to better understand health mechanisms by studying population groups.
To carry out this mission, Inserm was, from its very origin, designed to work in close partnership with other public and private research centers and hospitals. Today, 85% of the 360 Inserm research laboratories are located at University Hospitals or Cancer Centers. The others are located on the campuses of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) or the Pasteur or Curie Institutes.
Some 13,000 people (including 6,000 researchers) work at Inserm's 360 research units located throughout France.
