Kallistem

Kallistem is a young start-up that meets the requirements of modern testicular toxicology and issues of male infertility

Kallistem is a start-up specialized in animal and human in vitro spermatogenesis. It originates from results of the research conducted over 15 years by a scientific team directed by Philippe Durand at the Institute of Functional Genomics of Lyon (IGFL, Ecole Normale Supérieure de Lyon).

Mission
The company develops innovative technologies for germ cells culture to meet the new challenges of testicular toxicity and male infertility.

Issues
The deterioration of semen characteristics in the last 50 years in the world has become a serious concern (50% decrease in the number of ejaculated spermatozoa). Many studies also indicate that the quality of human semen in the world has declined significantly (on average 1% per year) since the middle of the last century. These reproductive disorders have been rapidly associated with an increasing exposure to toxicants in our daily environment (chemicals, cosmetics, agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals ...). Faced with this decline in male fertility, drastic measures should be taken to ensure better safety of the populations with respect to chemicals that are toxic for reproductive function and to ensure better treatments of male infertility.
Using its Bio-Alter® technology, Kallistem provides services in predictive and mechanistic in vitro testicular toxicology to assess the safety of chemicals, derived from human activities (pharmaceutical, chemical, agrochemical, cosmetics ...), on male fertility.
The company develops, in parallel, new technologies to identify biomarkers of testicular toxicity/fertility and to offer new techniques in assisted reproduction technology (ART).

The Bio-Alter ® systems are based on innovative culture processes of male germ cells. These systems are being validated in humans and are designed to be patented in 2013 for commercial exploitation starting from 2014.

Strategy
Kallistem aims to become a leader company in the field of biomarkers of testicular toxicity and of male infertility therapies. Its own R&D programs aimed at building a portfolio of patents for the marketing of a first product in 2014. Contacts have already been established with major companies in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries area.

Bio-Alter ® was awarded the price of innovative technology ADEME-Pollutec in 2010.
